Do you really need to update to Joomla 3.4 or later?
The answer is YES and IMMEDIATELY!
There are many reasons why you should be updating (migrating) your website from Joomla 1.5 and leaving the old Joomla behind. We are finding that more and more clients that we are working with need to move away from the old legacy CMS and migrate to the current secure version.
Here are a few reasons why you should be migrating to the latest version of Joomla:
Joomla 1.0 through 1.5.26 websites have the potential to invite hackers in and clause havoc to your website such as defacing the website, making the website disappear or worse have your outdated website used to send out spam to thousands of people causing your website to be disabled for non-compliance.
From September of 2012, Joomla 1.5 no longer provides support and updates. This is critical because this included all the security patches that use to keep your website safe! Migrating from Joomla 1.0, 1.5.x to at least 3.4 is vital to keep hackers at out, minimize downtime and keep your website secure.
We also have seen so many hosting providers running PHP (the software that runs Joomla and others programs) that are running PHP version 5.2, which is a very old version of PHP on a server and opening up your Joomla website to potential hackers that are taking advantage of the old servers. Joomla 3.0 needs to run on a PHP 5.3 server ensuring that the server environment is more up to date for added security. Support Data Inc keeps all of the servers up to date and secure.
So… consider asking yourself what would be better, suffering considerable downtime when your website gets hacked or spending the time now while your website is still up and running to safely migrate to the latest version without any downtime at all?
Extensions are no longer developed for Joomla 1.0 through 1.5.26, so you are putting your website at a disadvantage over your competitors. Do you want a website that is boring and out of date? Consider the migration a time to also refresh and revamp your website too! Support for Joomla 1.5 extensions are also no longer available, which can lead to vulnerable or unstable extensions on your website.
Of course there are a few of extensions that are still being developed for Joomla 1.5 but in all reality, all the major ones are no longer supported.
Once you have migrated from 1.0 or 1.5 to 3.4 or later, Joomla has incorporated a simple one click upgrade feature for future updates. Forget the hassle of the initial update/migration!
Once you have done the hard work migrating to the current Joomla, the rest should be easy to maintain.
Better Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Do you want more traffic to your site? Get higher search results in Google, with Joomla’s improved SEO, you get better results which also helps when searching from within the site.
New search capabilities have been added to Joomla which make is so much better than Joomla 1.5. The internal search itself is very much improved making it possible to search for content within your website.
Key item to understand
You may have noticed that while reading this article that we didn't really mention “upgrading” your Joomla website but rather “migrate” your Joomla website. The move from Joomla 1.0 or 1.5 to 3.4 or later is a website “migration” and not a website upgrade.
The changes from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 3.4 were so substantial that a simple upgrade which so many of us are use to is not possible. The great news is that our team is experienced in doing the more complicated migration so you do not have to do the work or know how to program.
